RRB SSE (Senior Section Engineer) is a Group-C Gazetted Officer post above JE level. SSEs are responsible for maintenance planning, supervising JE teams, asset management, safety compliance, and engineering works across Railway zones. SSE requires B.Tech (Diploma holders are NOT eligible) and competes at a higher difficulty in CBT-2.

B.Tech/B.E. in the relevant engineering discipline from a recognised university is mandatory for RRB SSE. Diploma holders are NOT eligible for SSE (unlike JE where Diploma is accepted). This is the key difference — SSE is specifically for graduate engineers.
SSE and JE share the same CBT-1 (100 qs, 90 mins — Math 30M + Reasoning 25M + GK 15M + General Science 30M). The CBT-2 for SSE is separate from JE — SSE CBT-2 is 120 minutes with 150 technical questions at a higher difficulty level covering advanced engineering concepts relevant to the chosen branch. Negative marking: 1/3 per wrong answer.
RRB SSE is at 7th CPC Level 7. Basic pay: ₹44,900/month. With DA, HRA, Transport Allowance, free railway pass, and quarters — gross monthly salary ₹75,000–₹95,000 in metro cities. Promotion path: SSE → JE (same level supervisory) → Section Engineer → Divisional Engineer → Senior Divisional Engineer.
