BARC OCES 2026 – Scientific Officer Recruitment (OCES/DGFS)

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India, conducts the OCES-2026 (Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates) programme to recruit Scientific Officers. This is a two-stage process: OCES (one-year orientation training) and optionally the DGFS (DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme — two years of M.Tech at IIT Bombay or IIT Madras, funded by DAE).

BARC OCES is available across all major engineering disciplines — Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Computer Science, Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, and more. Upon successful completion of training, candidates are posted as Scientific Officers in BARC, IGCAR, RRCAT, VECC, HWB, NPCIL, and other DAE units.

BARC OCES selection is a two-step process: (1) Screening — either through the BARC Online Examination (CBT on March 14-15, 2026) or through valid GATE-2024, GATE-2025, or GATE-2026 scores in the relevant discipline. Candidates are advised to attempt both avenues for maximum chances; (2) Selection Interview — shortlisted candidates appear for a personal interview at BARC Training School, Mumbai (or Hyderabad for some disciplines). Final selection is based solely on interview performance.

No travel allowance is paid for the online CBT exam. Outstation candidates are reimbursed AC Chair Car or 3rd AC railway fare for attending the interview.

BARC OCES 2026 Age Limit

Minimum 18 years. Maximum typically 26 years for Engineering graduates (B.E./B.Tech). For M.Sc. / M.Tech. holders, age relaxation may apply. Verify from the official BARC notification brochure at barcocesexam.in.

BARC OCES 2026 Educational Qualifications

B.E./B.Tech or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline (Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Metallurgy, etc.) with minimum 60% aggregate marks. OR M.Sc. in Physics/Chemistry/Biosciences/Mathematics with minimum 60% marks. Final-year students can apply if degree completion is confirmed by July 31, 2026. Hybrid degrees and Aerospace/Automotive specialisations may not be eligible — verify from the OCES eligibility codes in the official notification.

GATE Score (Alternative Screening Route)

A valid GATE 2024, GATE 2025, or GATE 2026 score in the relevant paper/subject can be used for direct screening into the interview stage. The GATE cut-off for screening is decided after the online exam — candidates should use both screening avenues.

• Use Both Screening Routes — GATE + BARC Exam: BARC strongly advises candidates to maximise their screening chances by attempting both the BARC CBT and GATE. GATE scores from 2024, 2025, or 2026 are all valid. Even if you missed the BARC exam, a good GATE score can get you to the interview stage.
• Interview Is Everything — Prelims Is Just Screening: The final selection is based solely on the interview performance — not the online exam or GATE score. Many candidates with high GATE scores lose to candidates with stronger interview performance. Prepare deeply for technical discussions in your discipline.
• Know BARC's Research Portfolio: Interviewers appreciate candidates who understand BARC's research work — nuclear reactors (CIRUS, Dhruva), nuclear fuel cycle, radiation technology, agriculture applications of nuclear science, and the Advanced Heavy Water Reactor project. Showing genuine interest in nuclear research is a significant advantage.
• Service Bond — 3 Years Mandatory: OCES trainees must execute a service bond to serve DAE for at least 3 years after training completion. Breaking the bond requires repayment of the stipend received. Factor this into your career planning before applying.

Solving previous year question papers is the most targeted exam preparation strategy. Past papers reveal recurring topics, question formats, difficulty level, and marking scheme nuances unique to BARC OCES 2026. Aim to solve 3–5 years of papers for maximum preparation benefit.

The admit card is released on the official website before the examination. Carrying it to the exam centre is mandatory — entry is not permitted without it. It contains roll number, exam centre, date and time. Carry a valid government photo ID alongside.

The official answer key is published after the exam. Candidates can raise objections within the specified window. The final answer key is used for result computation. Check the official website for provisional and final answer key release dates.

Cut-offs depend on total candidates, vacancies, and exam difficulty. Minimum qualifying marks are specified in the official notification. Actual selection cut-offs are typically higher in competitive years. Category-wise cut-offs are published with the result.

The result is published on the official website with scores, ranks, and qualifying status. Shortlisted candidates proceed to the next selection stage — interview, document verification, or physical tests as applicable. Check the official portal regularly for result updates.

Qualified candidates participate in counselling or document verification. Seat allotment or appointment is confirmed based on merit rank, category reservation, and vacancies. Carry all original certificates for verification at the designated venue.
